The mining park of Almadén
The town of Almadén faced an uncertain future when its cornerstone enterprise, the world's largest Mercury mine, closed down after two millennia of continuous operation. The town's unique cultural heritage has provided a new basis for development, through the creation of the Mining Park. But protecting thousands of visitors and workers against the hazards of Mercury poisoning has required extensive environmental restoration and monitoring.
