Slutwalks in Brasília. The Utopia of an Egalitarian City and Its Gendered Spaces
Whereas Brasília was envisaged as a utopian project that sought to create an egalitarian society, gender issues were not given prominent attention by its designers. As an egalitarian city, Brasilia aimed to offer to all its inhabitants, without social distinctions, equal opportunities and the urban qualities necessary for full human development. Also, Brasilia however has seen women claiming their full right to the city by organizing slutwalks. Hence, one can rightfully ask how its egalitarian ideals worked out on the ground, not only in terms of social stratifications but also in terms of gender. By combining the discursive analysis of the founding text of Brasília, historical facts, demographical data analysis, and social appropriations as evidence of gendered segregation, this paper argues that some of its spatial features contributed to gender-based discriminations that severely affect women.
