Moscow's Constructivist Legacy under Threat
The unprecedented wealth within Moscow following the economic regeneration in Russia has resulted in large-scale redevelopment and a shift from the austere and homogenous buildings of Soviet times to a more overtly modern and expensive urban fabric. This regeneration has come at a cost to thousands of historic buildings, with accusations from campaigners of the city council often putting ‘profit before preservation’. Constructivist architecture, signifying the origins of the socialist regime, has also been affected despite the high regard in which the movement is held worldwide. The paper assesses the significance and condition of Constructivist buildings in today's Moscow and uses two case studies to investigate the threats posed to these buildings by current socio-economic developments. It considers their future amid an environment of conflicting attitudes ranging from passionate campaigns for conservation to commercially driven apathy.
