The appearance of Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi's long-awaited volume An Oak Spring Flora provides a good opportunity to look back over the crop of recent books on botanical illustration and horticultural history. A selection from the past 5 years ranges from Nicolas Barker's intensive study of Basilius Besler's Hortus Eystettensis to Ray Desmond's extensive Dictionary of British & Irish Botanists and Horticulturists (the original edition of 1977 now revised and expanded). It includes the second edition of Wilfred Blunt and William T. Steam's The Art of Botanical Illustration, as well as the special issue of Apollo devoted to the reconstruction of the King's Privy Garden at Hampton Court, Middlesex, edited by Simon Thurley.
