Legionella in domestic hot water systems
Outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease have been associated with extensive hot water systems such as those in hotels and hospitals. The extent to which domestic plumbing systems in Britain harbour legionellae is almost completely unknown. The Electricity Research and Development Centre commissioned an investigation into the incidence of legionellae in 40 houses with hot water storage cylinders. Twenty houses had direct electric water heating, 20 had indirect water heating from a gas boiler. To establish and identify the conditions conducive to colonization of domestic hot water systems by legionellae would require further, in depth, investigations of the all the factors involved.
