Decentralization programs in Fascist Italy led not only to the construction of a number of New Towns, but also to the creation of suburban enclaves on the periphery of large cities. Twelve such borgate were built in Rome during the years preceding World War II. This essay takes stock of the history of urban planning in post-unification Rome, and then examines the planning and history of one such borgata, Primavalle.
