Evidence of “Doing Nothing”: The Utopic Document of Lacaton & Vassal
This article explores seemingly minor points of incongruity or “error” in a journal account of a project by architects Lacaton & Vassal as evidence of the limits of critical discourse within the architectural media. Combining Louis Marin's theory of “utopics” developed through the study of city maps with Sigmund Freud's study of errors in speech and writing, the article introduces the notion of an “editorial unconscious” at work within the media. This addresses the problematic of complicity within the architectural media and its use of architectural photography. It will be argued that Lacaton & Vassal express a genuine utopian impulse that is simultaneously accepted and rejected within this site of media dissemination, provoking discrete but significant marks of suppression within the editorial presentation of the project.
