Holyoke, Massachusetts: an Urban Design Study
This study was initiated by the authors in the Graduate Studio in Urban Design at Cornell University. It was selected for presentation as a design proposal at the 1985 A.C.S.A. Annual Meeting in Vancouver. It is an exploration of urban design strategies and tactics in a city undergoing both population decline and physical deterioration. Architects and planners traditionally have been trained to design for the physical expansion of our cities. Today, architects and planners, as well as those who teach and study these disciplines, need to be prepared to address new urban design problems of cities in a state of contraction.
