Optimum lengths of link beams for cantilevered roof construction
Comparisons are made between the expected cost of cantilevered beams compared to the same number of simple span beams. The study indicates a substantially lower cost for the cantilevered system. Design procedures are presented for systems designed both without constraints on span or beam size and with constraints. The study shows that the addition of constraints on beam size or on span lengths has a minor (less than 1.5%) effect on beam costs. The optimum span lengths are shown to be affected by the fixed costs of the columns and beams and the variable cost of beams proportionate to their loading.
