Cultural politics in Berlin
Berlin's cultural resources are one of the city's main assets and driving forces in a period of difficult transition. But former conditions of its political and economic survival have fallen away before future grounds can be secured. Both fears and hopes, that Berlin as the capital city of Europe's biggest country could become what it used to be, prove equally fallacious in the real context of Germany and Europe today. Berlin has to become something new and something that it never has been. The adequate use of its enormous cultural potential is still hampered by the usual resistance against unavoidable and deep structural changes under the pressure of drastic budget cuts and by a lack of realism in evaluating both cultural assets and deficits. The agenda of cultural politics should recognize the productive cultural potential of Berlin's heterogeneity, its diverse mentalities, experiences and lifestyles resulting from the decades of division. Urban space as a main cultural institution and the spatial dimension of the historically rooted East-West issue have still to be discovered.
