Brownfield Redevelopment in the Los Angeles Basin
This paper will discuss brownfields and their redevelopment within the United States and more specifically within Los Angeles County. A non-profit organization, Gateway Cities Partnership (GCP), has initiated a regional plan to achieve brownfield redevelopment in a 26 city subregion of the Los Angeles Basin. GCP has developed the Real Estate Recycling Program (RERP) to select and develop a number of demonstration sites to prove the feasibility of a regional approach. As a model of regional brownfield redevelopment, GCP has looked to the IBA Emscher Park success and its applicability in an American context. To evaluate the IBA model, its application was compared to the efforts being undertaken at the Baldwin Hills State Recreation Area on unincorporated lands located near the Gateway Cities in Southeast Los Angeles County.
