Computer Design Studio: Work in Process
Over the last three years, we have been involved in experimentation with methodologies which engaged the computer in formative explorations of the design idea. Transformation as process explores a technique for architectural design in the domain of both artifact and concept. The design studio approach described in the following paper integrates the computer into the design process to investigate the potential for the use of the computer in the exploration of syntax and perception, space and program. The computer is applied throughout the design process to explore the making of architecture which would not have been created using conventional methods.
The medium of the computer enables a change in process and perception which has the potential to alter spatial or formal understanding of the making of architecture as powerfully as did the idea of perspective in the Renaissance. Techniques inherent in computer integrated design establish new dimensions in design exploration, which may be grafted onto conventional understanding.
