Influence of rainfall characteristics on the infiltration moisture field of highway subgrades
This study explored the influence of rainfall characteristics on the changes in and distribution of subgrade moisture fields. The effects of the intensity and intermission duration of the rainfall on the distributional characteristics of the moisture fields of the subgrade were analysed by constructing a numerical model and a similar physical model. The extent of the moisture-disturbed zone increased logarithmically with the increase in the rainfall intensity until a stable value was reached. The rainfall intensity at which the stable value was reached greatly exceeded the saturated permeability coefficient of the subgrade, showing a delayed effect. In the rainfall-distributed zone, the rainfall intensity had a small impact on the increasing amplitude of the zone and the rainfall intermission duration had a small impact on the moisture distribution. Rainfall intermission had a smaller influence than continuous rainfall on the distribution of the moisture fields of the whole subgrade.
