British inter-war planning: the recollections of a government official

The typewritten recollections of F. Blaise Gillie, who joined the town-planning sub-division of the Ministry of Health in 1931, offer an ‘insider's’ perspective on what might otherwise be learned from the published and archival record of the further emergence of statutory planning in England and Wales. A perspective is offered on the extent to which such legislative advance had social purpose and on the Ministry's capacity to pursue such pre-occupation. Attention is drawn particularly to the role of interim development control and the exercise of ministerial discretion.
