Record of earthquake activity in China date back more than 3000 years, and measurements can be traced to 132 AD when Chang Heng devised his dragon seismoscope. More recent experience is here discussed by a member of the Beijing Architectural Design Institute, who stresses the value of 'strong columns and weak beams' for reinforced concrete and frame-shear wall structures, for example, and the need for bracing to improve stability of timber framing. Ring beams, tooth bonding and the addition of reinforced concrete columns greatly improve the performance of loadbearing brick walls.
