Self-Supporting “Genuine” Muqarnas Units
This paper describes the creation of two new self-supporting systems of muqarnas: line- and point-oriented. They represent a new muqarnas evolutionary step coming from the traditional pre-designed units. They provide new erecting systems, new experiences, and because they are self-supporting allow for the form to be seen from both sides (called “genuine”).
The paper starts by presenting the traditional pre-designed units, then each of the two new systems, and finally the computer program that made it possible to create them.
The new systems are still computer-creations; the paper prompts for further work in actualizing them into real buildings.
