Properties of recycled aggregate concrete for sustainable urban built environment
An increasing number of countries are currently looking at novel ways to recycle waste reclaimed from demolition. In this paper, the properties of the aggregate (virgin and reclaimed from waste), the dried concrete as well as the structural behavior of beam elements have been investigated. Specimens with six different percentages (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%) of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) were cast in an industrial plant. The water/cement ratio was kept constant and the slump was adjusted using superplasticizers. This study shows that the mechanical properties of green-concrete meet all criteria from standards. The concrete compressive strength was found to be similar for all concrete mixes. The beam specimens had similar failure loads. The number of cracks increased while the stiffness of the specimens decreased, with increasing percentage of RCA in the mixture.
