Estimation of Driving Rain Index for Nigeria
Average annual driving rain indices for 35 stations spread all over the country have been computed to produce map of driving rain exposure levels. Only nine stations fall under the classification of ‘moderate’ exposure while the remaining stations were in the ‘shielded’ category. Thus, seventy-four per cent of the stations need not take actions to prevent the damages resulting from driving rain on the exposed building surfaces. Some areas were identified to be prone to be affected by wind driven rain. In these areas, driving rain is an important parameter for consideration in the design of buildings. These areas are Benin-City, Calabar, Enugu, Ikeja (Lagos), Port Harcourt, and Warri, located near the coastal part of the country, while, Jos, Koduna and Makurdi in northern part also fall into this category.
