‘The first Parisian parks were “people's gardens,” a democratization of the landscape spaces of the elite and powerful’1 and also ‘a response to the industrial revolution and the modern world, an environmental answer to a society increasingly alienated from nature.’2 They were essential for the city because they offered vast expanses of verdure, and spaces reserved for nature, growth and merriment. The garden accommodated many activities, including promenading, dining, dancing and relaxing, within confined boundaries that enclosed and separated the bit of urban nature available. The gardens were also thought to be the ‘lungs of the city,’3 purifying the air and enhancing the quality of life. The city was usually invisible from within the gardens and parks of Paris. Buttes-Chaumont, Parc Monceau and other nineteenth-century gardens thrived on their largely cloistered nature.
