This paper from the Building and Road Research Institute at Kumasi, Ghana, discusses the application of more sophisticated criteria to non-machine stress grading. 'Green' and dry state basic stresses for some 45 west African hardwoods have been derived, and the timbers grouped into strength classes based on bending strength - seven strength classes for 'green' timber and at 12 per cent moisture content, and six strength classes at 18 per cent moisture content. Three structural grades are recommended for visual stress grading.
