Single-ply roof membranes of butyl rubber have a satisfactory life when installed and maintained properly, conclude Professor Ingemar Hoglund, Rikard Espling and Gunnar Hilding of the Division of Building Technology at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. The results from the inspection and testing of flat roofs showed that 38% were problem free, 38% were functioning roofs with minor defects and 24% had serious defects.
