SCOUR DOWNSTREAM OF A SLUICE GATE
The phenomenon of local scour due to horizontal submerged jet issuing from a sluice gate and flowing over a rigid floor and then over and erodible bed opening has been investigated. The experiments were conducted to study the effect of sluice gate opening, length of rigid apron and the depth of submergence on the scour hole. The maximum depths of scour were recorded after each run. Graphical relationships are developed for maximum depth of scour, length of apron, height of opening and downstream Froude number using the experimental data. The maximum scour depth increases with decrease in length of rigid apron. The maximum depth of scour decreases as the downstream Froude number decreases due to decrease in the submergence depth.
