The Unsuitability of the Classic Room Acoustical Theory in Long Enclosures
The subject of this paper is the long enclosure, such as tunnels, underground stations and so on, where one dimension is much greater than the other two, although the other two are still relatively large. A series of theoretical analyses shows that the sound field in long enclosures, whether with geometrically or diffusely reflecting boundaries, is far from diffuse as assumed in classic room acoustical theory. It is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that in long enclosures the sound pressure level decreases continuously and the reverberation varies systematically along the length, and the decay curves are concave. It is concluded that the classic formulae are unsuitable in long enclosures.
