The Sanitary House Remodelled: The Import of British Health and Housing Reforms to Australia, 1860–1920
In a preceding article, a criticism of architectural history and theory was the catalyst for an architectural interpretation of the influence of health and housing reforms upon the design of workers' dwellings in England, between 1840 and 1920. In this article this interpretation is extended to assess how the ideology of a sanitary house was transmitted to Australia and adopted by architects and social reformers in the main colonial towns. Thus, this contribution explores the interaction between architectural, technological and socio-cultural factors in the development of residential areas in Australia.
