Seismic Isolated Continuous Railway Composite Bridges in the North of Algeria
Three continuous bridges with typical 44 m span and different lengths (156, 288 and 614 m) have been built for the railway line from Thénia to Tizi Ouzou in the north of Algeria, which is an active seismic zone. Rail–structure interaction criteria require that railway bridges should have fix points with high horizontal stiffness. Therefore, the piers and abutments of typical railway bridges in seismic zones have very large dimensions as a consequence of huge horizontal forces generated by earthquake action in these fix points. To optimize the dimensions of the infrastructure, seismic isolation techniques using hysteretic steel devices with elastoplastic behaviour have been extensively used in these bridges, transferring controlled horizontal forces between the deck and the infrastructure. Furthermore, as a compromise between mass and cost, the bridges were designed as composite steel decks.
