THE DESIGN OF THE VISUAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE AGED PARTIALLY SIGHTED
Approximately one percent of the populations of developed countries are classified as partially sighted. It has been the practice to assist these people with optical aids, such as magnifies, to allow them to exploit their residual vision. Light and its use has received little attention either as an aid or as an element in the use of other aids. This paper reports on a recent study on the use of light as an aid for the partially sighted in which it was found that significant improvements in visual performance were noted using modest task luminances. The importance of the careful design of the visual field is the major theme.
