A Theoretical Context for Shift and Share Analysis

Shift and share analysis has been subjected to heavy criticism at least partly because of its lack of an underlying theoretical context. Such a context is provided in this paper in terms of a regional input growth model based upon standard microeconomic theory. Within this model the basic shift and share equation can be derived through use of specific simplifying assumptions. The model can be adapted to include linkage and multiplier effects between industries, regions, or the national economy.

L'analyse déplacement-distribution a été soumise à une critique considérable, du moins en partie à cause de l'absence d'un cadre théorique sous-jacent. Un tel cadre se voit fournir à partir de cet article et sous forme d'un modèle régional de la croissance des inputs fondé sur la théorie microéconomique courante. Au sein de ce modèle l'équation de base de déplacement-distribution provient des hypothèses simplificateurs particuliers. Il est possible d'adapter le modèle afin d'incorporer des effets de liaison et multiplicateurs entre les industries, les régions ou l'économie nationale.

Die Shift-und Shareanalyse ist wenigstens zum Teil scharfer Kritik unterworfen worden, weil es ihr an Unterbauung durch einen theoretischen Zusammenhang mangelt. Solch ein Zusammenhang wird in diesem Aufsatz in Form eines Modells der Zunahme regionalen Aufwandes geliefert, das sich auf mikroökonomische Standardtheorie gründet. Innerhalb dieses Modells kann die Ausgangsshift-und Sharegleichung durch Anwendung spezifischer, vereinfachender Annahmen abgeleitet werden. Das Modell gestattet Anpassungen, so dass Verbindungen mit und Multiplikatorwirkungen zwischen Industrien, Regionen und der staatlichen Wirtschaft einbezogen werden können.
