Tank irrigation is an old-established practice, particularly in semi-arid tropical parts of South India, but is today a neglected resource, and irrigation tanks are underutilized due to mismanagement. However, suitable management strategies and organization would allow the better utilization of existing tanks. An analysis of five tanks in North Arcot district shows that four of them yield a benefit-cost ratio of more than one in all sensitivity combinations, so that modernization would yield significant benefits over costs. The results also show that tank performance can be improved significantly by periodical investment in repair works such as repairing sluice structures and surplus weirs, desilting tanks to increase their storage capacity and cleaning supply channels.
