Eine Plattform für die Wissenschaft: Bauingenieurwesen, Architektur und Urbanistik
«Patchwork City» Berlin
In 1989, Berlin was still unique as a divided city. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, it has changed. Has the maelstrom of modernity (Harvey) made it a metropolis like others, fragmented, fractured, splintering? This article looks at what has happened since November 1989 to the patchwork of historical layers that make up Berlin's urban environment. It discusses the institutionally fragmented political and administrative structures as well as the new and increasing patterns of socio-economic and ethnic segregation. Whilst much has been achieved since reunification to integrate these fragments, tendencies to fragmentation have also increased.
Berlin has always been in the making—its vacant spaces and derelict urban areas testify to its potential to develop further. Even though its highly fragmented features seem to suggest that fragmentation is the appropriate way to describe the city, the article concludes by proposing a different, complementary perspective, namely to read Berlin as a fractal metropolis.
