Supervisory skill at site level is widely assumed to derive from 'unteachable' experience or knowhow that can only come with time. But from analysis of the problems and field studies of some civil engineering activities the authors argue that strategies appropriate to different operations can be identified and systematically taught, if the criterion is to achieve the best rather than the mediocre.
