Planner's Notebook: Microcomputer Applications in Planning
In this and in selected future issues of the Journal, “Planner's Notebook” will feature concrete examples of the use of microcomputers in planning. In this issue John Landis writes about his experience with a simple shiftshare analysis he developed on a spreadsheet. Future articles will deal with population analysis and projection and revenue forecasting for a city budget, both again on spreadsheets. Our intention is to show, in a bit more detail than has been done elsewhere, how microcomputers are beginning to be used in our profession. It has been said often that there is a technological revolution taking place in planning as a result of personal computers. “Planner's Notebook” will treat that assertion as a verifiable hypothesis by attempting to locate and publish outstanding examples of the new technology being employed in practice. If we cannot find such new technology, or if it does not prove worthy of publication, we will reject the hypothesis. If, on the other hand, such technology does exist, we intend to help practicing planners keep abreast of it. We invite contributions of articles featuring either other applications written for existing software or original programs the authors are willing to share.
