A procedure for parameter sensitivity analysis which may help a model user to understand the hydrologic model structure is presented. The procedure includes the one-parameter sensitivity analysis in its new version—a relative one-parameter sensitivity analysis—and the two-parameter sensitivity analysis. The relative one-parameter sensitivity analysis is applied to determine the ranking of parameter importance (or activity) and to explain various characteristics of the sensitivity surfaces which result from the two-parameter sensitivity analysis. The latter analysis is used to determine the type of parameter interaction and zones of higher or lower parameter activities.
It is concluded that where parameter ranking of activity differs on the two sides of the optimum and where it is also dependent on the data used to calibrate the model, parameter interactions depend solely on the model structure.
