Assessment of flow regime alteration in the Krishna River basin
In the present study, Indicator of Hydrological Alteration (IHA) tool is used to calculate the Hydrologic Alteration (HA) along the middle and lower Krishna River Basin. 33 ecological parameters are evaluated to understand the impact of the dams on the downstream of the ecological instream flow. This study focuses on assessing HA through dam impact periods by differentiating and comparing the discharge data into pre- and post-dam impact periods. Therefore, the data affected by the climate variability are eliminated. The obtained results show that the impact of the Nagarjuna Sagar dam is high with an average HA value of 0.81 among the five dams, and PD Jurala has slightly altered with an average HA value of 0.59. Out of the 33 parameters considered, 11 have alternated highly, with HA values ranging from 0.61 to 0.83. The impact of dams on the Krishna River has shown a typical hydrological alteration which might be the risk to the aquatic species. The output of this study will be helpful to the water managers with sufficient information to make a decision.
