Convenience versus privacy
There are many examples of blocks of flats in which the flats are entered from balconies or galleries that run the whole length of one side of the building, but opinion is still divided about the merits of this arrangement. For example, some say that the access balconies encourage noisy play by children, obstruct the light and curtail privacy. To test these attitudes, the Swedish National Institute for Building Research has been examining user-experience of such flats, which are a comparatively recent phenomenon in that country. The results are given in detail in reports R41 and R42: 1971 by Lillemor Anderson, Ulf Bredberg, Paul Engstrom and Anders Linden. The findings are summarised here.
