Discussion of “experiment and statistical assessment on piping failures in soils with different gradations”
Some of the granular soils are internally unstable, that is the fine particles are removed under the effect of seepage forces. Such kind of soils could cause complete or partial failure of the engineering structures constructed from or on these soils. The critical hydraulic gradient of these soils can be predicted using some semiempirical models. An important illustration of calculating the equivalent particle diameter is presented here to get more accurate calculations.
