Biophilia and biomimicry: evolutionary adaptation of human versus nonhuman nature
Both the concepts of biophilia and biomimicry focus on the human relationship to nature, based on the belief that by better understanding the processes of evolutionary adaptation, we will be able to utilize this knowledge to advance human interests, particularly in the design of the built environment and in fostering a more sustainable world. These two concepts differ, however, in their respective emphases on human evolutionary adaptation versus that of other species and natural processes. This article addresses similarities and differences in these two innovative ideas. First, important differences are examined, followed by areas of convergence in viewpoint and emphasis. The article then concludes by considering how these two perspectives might better collaborate, particularly in the design of human structures and communities.
