In his Preface to one of the first books in English dedicated to the history of the French garden, William Howard Adams wrote the following:
The French garden is one of the celebrated and distinguishing elements of that civilization, as is its cuisine and code of manners. Rooted in ancient tradition ... French landscape art represents a major contribution in Western culture. In its formal manifestation, before the landscape revolution of the eighteenth century, it was one of the most powerful images and symbols of the seventeenth century's Golden Age.1
