The Principle of Heritage – Preservation and its Generalisation in the Anthropocene
The following considerations try to outline some of the consequences the proclaimed era of the Anthropocene might have for the city. The enormous acceleration of development will lead to a climax of world population in this century, most probably overtaxing the bearing capacity of the globe if general development continues as it has in the past.
The continuous abstraction, driven by digitalisation, loosens emotional ties to the environment and with it diminishes the readiness to take care of it with an existential responsibility. But there is proof of new lively interests in the city, which give hope for handling some basic uncertainties of the Anthropocene in real-life experiments.
In search of traditions to dwell on in developing appropriate attitudes for this situation, the tradition of heritage preservation and resetting old buildings for new purposes might serve – if generalised and extended – as a stimulus.
The principles of resetting existing buildings and of fostering emotional interest, responsibility and active involvement in the city must be complemented by a principle of “enlivement” (Weber 2016). The city itself must become a part of nature, full of plants and animals.
