Urban Consolidation: Beyond the Stereotypes
Urban consolidation (defined here as increasing urban residential densities), has emerged recently as one of the central issues in Australian metropolitan planning. This has been marked by the common use of consolidation policies in recent Australian metropolitan plans, as well as a spate of academic publications on the topic (see for example Bunker, 1985, 1989; Collie, 1990; Hedgcock and Bain, 1986; Troy, 1989). However the formulation and implementation of consolidation policies has been hampered by a relative lack of empirical research on the consequences of such policies. In this context, the present paper aims to document and analyse public attitudes towards higher densities in Perth, and discuss the policy implications of these attitudes.
