The essay takes the construction of the Three Gorges Dam in China as a measure of the global production of concrete against which can be estimated the extent of the consumption of water. The essay also reflects on concrete's alchemical becoming, through the interaction of cement, aggregate, and water, a dynamically unified, although tragically irredeemable, material. The essay utilises a broadly quantitative methodology, although the data generates an aporia between statistical methods on the one hand, and imaginative projections on the other. The resultant ambiguity blurs the long-held distinction between quantitative and qualitative methods and the subjective/objective binary on which the distinction is based.
