WATERHAMMER DAMAGE OF VALVES IN A PUMPING STATION—AN INVESTIGATIVE STUDY
Four incident cases of sluice valve cap and body bursts were reported for a pumping station of water works. Waterhammer analyses were carried out for all incident cases by modelling the observed conditions. Special emphasis was given to the closure of conventional non-return valve (NRV) with time-lag after flow reversal. Delayed closure of NRVs was the cause of the observed cap and body bursts of the old sluice valves under transient conditions. Though several other methods of protection including the provision of air chamber were examined, they were not suggested/recommended from cost-effective and time response points of view. Replacement of the existing conventional NRVs with non-slam and fast-acting ones solved the problem and since then the system has been working satisfactorily.
