The Burnham Scions' suburban legacy: the 1917 Plan of Evanston
Daniel Burnham moved from Chicago to the suburb of Evanston in 1886. Here he raised his family, including his sons Daniel, Jr. and Hubert. Evanston was also the home to close Burnham associates, Dwight Perkins and Thomas Tallmadge. These protégés of Burhnam, Sr. became well known in urban planning and architecture circles over the course of long careers. In the spring of 1916, Burnham, Jr. led a year‐long collaborative effort with his brother and Perkins and Tallmadge that culminated in the Plan of Evanston. This paper examines the significance of this suburban plan within the context of a growing metropolitan region.
