Accurate prediction of behaviour of pollutants discharged into rivers is crucial to the effective management of water quality of riverine systems. A finite volume (FV) scheme for the solution of the equation describing unsteady transport of nonconservative pollutant/BOD with first order decay rate is developed in this paper. The well-tested QUICK scheme is used for the computation of gradients of diffusion term and control volume face values of the advective term. The proposed FV scheme is tested with two examples: one for continuous plane injection of non-conservative pollutants for finite duration of time and the other with time-dependent periodic injection of pollutant into the riverine systems. The FV scheme leads to a solution that compares well with the analytical solution. The scheme is inherently conservative, transportive and produces oscillation free solution at the discontinuity in the concentration field.
