SCOUR CONTROL BY SUBMERGED VANES IN A CURVED CHANNEL
Submerged vanes installed at incidence to the channel axis in the outer half of a river-bend significantly reduce the secondary currents and, as a result control the scour at the outer bank. In the present study, experiments were performed in a curved channel having two consecutive meanders with the parallel and zigzag arrangements of the submerged vanes in an attempt to study effect of vanes on scour around bends. Installation of submerged vanes effectively reduces the scour at the outer bank of channel at both meanders. Velocity distribution across the width at the curve is more uniform than the velocity distribution without the vane. Zigzag vane arrangement appears to be more effective in reducing the effect of secondary flow than the parallel vane arrangement. In parallel arrangements of vanes, the maximum scour depth appears to be invariant for the range of the data used in the present study. However, it varies with vane parameters in zigzag arrangement.
