For many countries the problems of the late 'seventies heralded a decade of restriction in building research, due essentially to the recession in construction activity itself. Now, signs of change can be seen as several countries embark on new projects with the provision of new laboratories and large-scale facilities. Some of these developments are reviewed here by the Secretary General of CIB.
