What went down in the contemporary history of Ethiopia as the ‘Red Terror’ was not only an indelible scar but also has far-reaching implications for the country's future as well. The ‘Red Terror’ was unleashed by the military government of Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam in the mid-1970s to decimate the left opposition. Political polarisation led to extreme form of violence. Undoubtedly, the forces involved both as instigators and victims of the ‘Red Terror’ have differing perceptions and assessments of the violence. But it is important to establish what happened during the terror, methods used and the number of institutions involved in advancing it. Second, a meaningful analysis of the ‘Red Terror’ should also situate the whole conflict in a proper historical perspective. This happened at a historical juncture that Ethiopia was, and still is, passing through; from authoritarian politics to democracy as the end of the monarchy gave way to a journey to the unknown.
