Weighing the criticism from people in building practice that there are too many standards and codes, the author argues that improvements in professional training would make many codes unnecessary. This is especially true of what may be termed building physics, notably heat and sound, which will dominate building control measures in future, it is argued. There are, however, technical and economic limitations to the progressive upgrading of code requirements. With sound insulation, flanking transmission problems will create a positive restraint. With thermal insulation, further improvements may impair sound insulation performance; yet rising operating costs of buildings from increased energy prices will make still stricter requirements for thermal performance imperative.
