Dilation behaviour of asphalt mixtures
An extensive experimental study of the dilation behaviour of asphalt mixtures was performed. The effect of mixture composition (volume fraction, gradation, shape and size of aggregate) and test conditions (loading/unloading, temperature and confinement pressure) of idealized asphalt mixtures of various volume fractions of aggregate was performed. The volume fraction and angularity of aggregate was found to play an important role on the dilation behaviour whereas the experimental conditions were found to have no effect on the dilation behaviour of asphalt mixtures. A generic DBM mixture was fabricated with two different volume fractions of bitumen. It was found that an increase in bitumen content decreases the dilation gradient. An analytical model proposed by Goddard and Didwania (1998) was successfully used to predict the dilation gradient for mixtures with sub-spherical aggregate, but failed to predict the dilation behaviour of specimens with angular aggregate.
