Analytical and Numerical Study of the Cyclic Behavior of U-Shaped Yielding Dampers
In this study, numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the cyclic behavior of U-shaped dampers under varying load orientations. After calibration of the numerical model, cyclic analyses were performed to examine the influence of the damper’s radius and thickness on effective and elastic stiffness, strength, energy absorption, and equivalent viscous damping ratio (EVDR). Additionally, equations were proposed to estimate these results and design objectives. The most influential variables of the damper on each outcome were subsequently evaluated. The study found that increasing the damper’s thickness while decreasing its radius increased effective stiffness, energy dissipation, EVDR, and ultimate strength.
