Russell Gage Olmsted (1844–1925) of Hamilton, Ontario, was a distant Canadian relative of eminent American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903). He was born in Binbrook Township to Sarah Martin and Samuel Nash Olmsted, whose father, Russell Olmsted, had been a pioneer of West Lincoln County. The boy went to local schools, and worked on his father's farm before acquiring his own property at Ancaster. He married Charlotte Rymal, daughter ofJoseph Rymal, Liberal Member ofParliament of the Dominion of Canada, and grand-daughter of Jacob Rymal, a Liberal member of the prior governing body, the Upper Canada Assembly.
